We’re taking a closer look at what CBD is in reality, prior to exploring the most important benefits to your health, fitness and sports performance.

What is CBD?

Is it a medication? Are you sure it’s a medicine? The answer is no, it’s a “recovery super supplement’ and no, it’s not going cause you to get high. CBD, or cannabidiol is the latest craze on the mainstream recovery block and, like so many other quick-fix supplements there’s much hype about CBD. The ingredient is one of over 100 chemicals (known as cannabinoids) of the marijuana plant.

In the UK the UK, the government has categorised CBD as a ‘novel food’. CBD is available in numerous forms including oils and drops, to creams, sprays, drinks and Gummies.

The list of supposed benefits is vast, with better sleep, reduced inflammation, anxiety and pain relief in the top list. Certain brands have also claimed that CBD could reduce the severity and frequency of seizures. It can also protect the brain, improve skin, ease nausea, improve heart health and manage weight.

CBD & Elite Athletes

There’s support from professional athletes as well, having WADA cleared it, with advocates in sports that range from UFC up to triathlon, golf and rugby. Former players of the NFL and other sports where opioids have been used extensively as painkillers, have spoken out in support of CBD.

In spite of the absence of evidence to support CBD benefits in humans – most studies involve its effects on rats – it was a huge market at the end of the last decade. It’s been predicted that the market of the UK alone will be worth PS1bn in 2025.

The CMC could be considered to be part of an international cannabis pro-cannabis lobby. This could have contributed to boosting sales, but countless accounts of the benefits contribute to the increase.

Benefits of CBD

Larger doses of CBD oil UK have been found to balance neurotransmitters throughout the body. They also aid with a variety of anxiety-related issues. And although we need further research, there is evidence that CBD can stimulate neurons in the brain. This increases the amount of dopamine released. That not only increases the amount of energy, but also mood.

CBD could also assist in helping help to calm your central nervous system which is supported by several studies.

Recent research has proven that CBD could reduce inflammation and pain. It does this by altering the endocannabinoid receptor system, which functions within the nervous system to reduce pain through neurotransmitters.

Be on the lookout for THC

However it is important to note that the NHS warns on its website that’some cannabis-related products are available to buy on the internet, without prescription. It’s likely that the majority of these items… will contain THC and are not safe to use.’

The THC issue has been an extremely difficult issue in those in the CBD market. Until recently, many have believed that the law is subject to interpretation with regard to allowable levels of less than 0.2 percent (which isn’t enough to cause an increase in the level of THC) and include the psychoactive component in their products.

Sporting bodies, like the UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) and the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) recommend caution.

‘Despite its legal status for CBD the product still poses the possibility of a danger to athletes, according to UKAD. The athletes must be aware of the risk of inadvertently ingesting a CBD product that has more THC than what they are used to or contains another cannabinoid that sporting bodies ban.’

Can all cannabinoids be legalized in the sport?

Other than CBD, all cannabinoids other than CBD are banned in sports. Additionally, USADA says they can stay in your system long after using them. The agency also says it’s almost impossible to obtain the pure CBD extract or oil from cannabis plants.

Confused? There’s more. It’s not just the CBD. World Health Organization (WHO) states that CBD is generally well-tolerated with a high quality safety record’. However there was a Harvard Medical School publication claimed nausea, fatigue and irritability can be side effects.

And while CBD remains a popular choice of supporters and has a lot of potential, it doesn’t come cheap.

Ultimately, until researchers conduct more extensive studies on the effects of CBD are likely to be largely speculative. However, that doesn’t mean CBD won’t be beneficial for you.

Many people have reported positive results from regular CBD usage. If you’re intrigued take care to increase the dosage slowly. Also, don’t get discouraged if it does not completely change your fitness and health.
