Why Start A Vlog In 2022

  • by

Vlogs are becoming the latest content. It’s possible you feel like you need one. However, it is also possible that you are wondering if you should wait to start one.
Your vlog will not be noticed if there are more than 300 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute.

Just like podcasting and blogging, video content can be your voice and your story. Here are some reasons to start a video blog and how you can get it started.
What is a video log?

What is a vlog, first of all? What makes it different from other video types?

You probably guessed that vlog stands for video blog. It’s content you’d write about in a blog post, but you’re talking to a camera instead.

Two main types of vlogs are available: A ‘talking head’ video, where the camera is mounted on a tripod (or on top of a stack of books, depending on your equipment budget) The camera is held steady as the vlogger speaks about the subject. Or, the camera can be placed on a tripod (or on a stack of books depending on your equipment budget) and the vlogger will film clips as they go.
The rise of celebrity vloggers

It is easy to get caught up in the complex side of YouTube that we see so often in the media.

YouTubers sell out arenas during nationwide tours
YouTubers land book deals and make it to the bestseller list.
YouTubers can earn six-figure salaries from pre-roll ads alone, not to mention all brand sponsorships and merchandise profits.

YouTube’s elite have many content creators who diligently record and upload videos to a larger audience.

You’re setting yourself up to fail if fame and fortune are the only reasons you want to start a video blog. Out of the many millions of YouTube channels, only 4,000 have more than 1 million subscribers. The great thing about vlogging, however, is that you don’t need to have a million subscribers in order to give and receive lots of value through your videos.
Vlogging is a great way to grow your audience.

A vlog can be a great way to reach new people if you have a blog, podcast or both. Different people consume content differently. Some prefer to listen or read advice or stories, while others prefer to view it.

More people are paying attention

YouTube is quickly becoming a major source of entertainment. More people choose to watch YouTube videos instead of traditional TV or Netflix. YouTube is a place where we see real people with real lives. This makes the content more relatable.

Establish a personal connection

Vlogging is a much more effective way to make a connection with your audience than podcasting or writing. It’s meaningful to hear someone speaking to you even though it’s via video. You are letting people in on a small part of your life and thoughts by vlogging.

Loyalty to your audience

Vlogging can help you build trust with your audience if you have an existing audience. YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world, making it a great place for newcomers to content creation.

YouTube hosts over one billion hours of video per day. This means that you will upload your content to a place people already search for it.

It is important to note that YouTube doesn’t allow you to own your audience like an email list or website. You can only deliver content to them by posting videos or using YouTube’s messaging system. Both have their flaws.

This does not mean that you don’t have to work hard to get a YouTube subscriber to sign up for your email list. Your core audience will follow your videos to other platforms because of the loyalty you build through vlogging. You should consider YouTube subscribers warm leads for other projects.

A new vlogger is the best way to grow an audience

With so many videos being uploaded every day to YouTube, it can be difficult to make a mark on a new platform. The best way to stand out on a new platform is not to make videos that appeal all people, but to focus your efforts on a particular niche.

Did you know that you can choose who your audience is? You can target a specific audience by making videos that appeal to them. This will help you attract people in that niche and create an audience that views you as the go-to person on this topic.

You can grow your channel by choosing a niche. Your videos are more likely to appear in search results for the topic. People will also know how to describe your channel when they talk about it to their friends.

It’s possible that they have never seen a channel similar to it (one that speaks directly and is unique to them), so they will be more likely to share it. YouTube has shown me the power and potential of niches.

My channel was started over four years ago. I made videos about any topic that interest me, including fashion, food and DIY projects. After three years, I was able to earn around 30,000 subscribers. Then I made a major shift. I decided to concentrate my content on design. Because I am a designer, that is the topic that interests me most.

I was all in with design videos. While some people stopped coming to my channel for the lookbooks or craft projects, I became well-known in my niche, attracted thousands of new viewers, and I am still in high demand.

YouTube now recommends my videos along with those from other design channels. I have been featured on numerous roundup lists of “top graphic designers to watch on YouTube”.

My fourth YouTube channel anniversary saw me reach 70,000 subscribers. This is a difference of 40k in just one year!

The best way to grow your YouTube audience is to choose something you are well-known for and use it as your starting point to create content.
How to start a vlog

While there is a lot to consider when researching vlog content ideas for beginners. There are a few things that I hear the most when people ask for my advice.

“What camera should you use?”

This is the most common question people ask when they are interested in vlogging.

Caleb Wojcik, our friend, has created a guide for video gear. You can read it here. But when it comes down to vlogging, the content of your vlog matters more than what you record it on.

While higher quality audio and video will appear more professional, viewers will leave your vlog if it isn’t engaging.

Which camera should you choose? Whatever camera you have!

“What should we talk about?”

One of the most common reasons people give for not starting a vlog is that they don’t know what topic to discuss. Here’s Gary Vaynerchuk’s advice. Gary Vaynerchuk is a CEO and entrepreneur with over one million subscribers on YouTube. He also owns a multi-million-dollar business.

Document, don’t create.

His advice is simple. Instead of trying to find new content ideas and stressing out, document your life and business.

Your thoughts and experiences are welcome. You can share what is motivating you right now or what frustrates you. While you will still be creating content and sharing your thoughts, you won’t have to worry about what topic to discuss. It will be instantly relatable because you are being yourself.

Look at your favorite vlogs and you will see that most of them follow the same idea of creating vs documenting. They share a day of their lives, including their food photography process, thoughts about politics, and their latest iPhone review. They are being authentic and sharing what they think.

If you are unsure what topic to discuss when you vlog, I suggest you think about the information you have on your chosen niche. Anything that comes to your mind, any part of your process that you think could be made into a short video. Anything you struggle with today or any issues you may have faced when you started.

You’ll soon have a long list of video ideas. That’s it! Your next year’s content will be organized. Your audience will be amazed at the value you can bring to them by sharing your process.
Keep in touch with your YouTube audience

My best tip for learning how to vlog is: Get a camera and get talking.

Do not leave it. Please share your thoughts. You can upload it to the internet for everyone to see and you will be amazed at what happens. You’ll be able to build a loyal following by sharing your process and being consistent.

An email list is essential to keep in touch with your audience.

YouTube will send notifications to subscribers whenever you upload new videos, but what about those viewers who never clicked the subscribe button? What if you want your subscribers to be updated on a project that you have coming up?

An email list is the best way for your news to be delivered directly to your followers’ inboxes.

The easiest way to get your email list started is to create a landing page for free (link to it in your description on YouTube videos or your Instagram bio).
