The History of Norton Tug Of War
Norton Tug Of War Club is based in the city of Stoke-on-Trent. Norton was founded in 1986 by the club president Danny Evans. The club began by pulling at small shows and local competitions. From such humble beginnings the club has gradually grown throughout the years.
The squad mainly comprised of friends from Norton and surrounding areas. The club however was ambitious and branched out to start pulling in the AAAs sport England. The youth side showed the potential the club had by winning the national championship in 1987.
However the senior team had it a lot tougher due to the fierce competition in this area. Even though it had limited success in competitions it was always a very hard team to beat. Then in 1992 the team became the English national champions in the 560 kilo weight class, which also gave it the opportunity to represent England for the first time.
This was the start of great thnigs for the club. The club competes at both indoor and outdoor events. The list of achievements for club and country is overwhelming. Numerous trophies and awards have been won over the years. This however has not come without paying a price.
Suffering defeats (hard for a team so motivated and dedicated to victory), losing talented pullers, rebuilding the team and coping with injuries. But we have come to realise that sport is like a journey and to be great you need strength for the rockiest of paths.
